Sunday Shop Update: Painter’s Case to Jewelry Display
Ihope you’ve had a great weekend. As the craft fair draws nearer, I’ve shifted my focus from creating jewelry to creating displays. I want to share with you how I’ve outfitted B’s uncle’s painters case from the early 1960′s to a jewelry display. The rules for me using this sentimental item inluded no sanding, painting, drilling, decopauging, or doing anything that might permanently change the case. The case itself is beautiful, telling a story of a painter’s toolbox… I decided to cut fabric to fit the lining of the case and I adhered the fabric using a double sided hem tape which is more secure than normal double sided tape. This tape is also flexible enough to not rip into the wood. The cubby holes in the center are perfect for holding brooches, earrings, or hairpins. I’ll be spreading my items out among numerous vintage plates, but I definitely want to utilize this space. I’ll use the top portion of the painter’s case to hang some of my necklaces.

The owner of a Loop jewelry supply business savagely beaten last week in a home invasion at his Sauganash residence has died, authorities said. Shai Miller, 57, was declared dead at 5:30 a.m. today at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston , according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Miller died almost a week after two armed men stormed into his home in the 6300 block of North Kildare Avenue at about 9:20 p.m. on Oct. 27 and bound Miller with duct tape before beating him, police said. The attackers also tied up Miller’s 14-year-old son, but he was not harmed. Miller was taken in critical condition to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston , where he was in intensive care with a brain hemorrhage. I often have strange dreams
Sometimes it was a small family, other times it was a whole herd of friends. Gatsby’s closed their doors for good around 1990. Which was probably a good thing, because Sherwin (one of the owners) was pushing close to 80 by then, I’m sure. So, back to my dream. I had dreamed I’d gone back to MA to help out in the store, and naturally, as can happen in a dream, the store looked exactly the same. I was at the register, which was at the front of the store right by the entrance which had display cases of jewelry and health & beauty products. Suddenly, a large groups of the owner’s friends came in and were all gathered around the front counter, making me feel like they were a mob closing in. Phyllis came out from the back office and they all scattered to go say hi to her, except for a couple of women who wanted to look at some Kiehl’s skin creams, which were a big hit with the ladies from “The City”. Phyllis, Sherwin and the group, except for the ladies I was helping, left for lunch and I was left to run the store.

On the left another old lady brooch from my mom (yikes I steel a lot of things from her ), and two thrifted rose brooches. On the right a thrifted purple horse (looks a little like a Dala Horse, which I love!), a bow brooch that belonged to my grandma and the brooch with the purple/green stones is my oldest possession and belonged to my great-grandmother. Wow, thank you guys so much for all your support regarding my blog designs. I am so excited about this new adventure, and can’t wait to have my website up and running (it should be sometime this week! I will keep you updated). Anyway…You’re not going to believe this. I have an actual craft to share. Crazy, right? It feels weird, but I think I like it. I’ve missed the ol’ blog. Today I did a really sad thing. I packed up all my craft supplies so that we could get started on the nursery. The nursery part is exciting, but having all my craft supplies in a box and nowhere to put them? Not such a happy thing. Hopefully they find a new home soon. So anyway, we came to my parent’s house for dinner tonight and my mom just knew I needed to do a little crafting to cheer me up. So, she showed me a little fabric brooch that she bought at a cute local boutique and we decided to try and make one like it. They turned out really cute, if I do say so myself.

A little felted brooch
I finished another little felted brooch today. The image of the two vintage girls posing as angels were irresistible and I had to make something with it. I attached a little silver locked so the new owner could personalize it. I added some lavender buds between the layers for a sweet surprise. Just squeeze and enjoy the relaxing scent. I spent the morning shopping with mom. Part of her Christmas gift was a clothing shopping spree. She lost over 30 pounds during her surgery ordeal. Her clothes hung on her like rags. Now she is looking and feeling really spiffy. After a quick lunch we headed home with the sun shining brightly and smiles on our faces. Tomorrow I finish the rental painting then have a break for a week before starting the next. After painting is finished all my attention will be focused on an exciting project for crazy quilters to be released in the spring…no, it isn’t a book just yet

Because I like to play around with them I never glue them to getter or attach them in a way that I won’t be able to re-use them… Here I just picked a few I liked and twisted them together and pinned them in my hair using regular hairpins and clips. btw. Yes my hair tips are still Lilac (can’t really see it in the grayish photos though), the color fades out really fast so I have to redo it like twice a week :/ xox

Sizzix Fresh Vintage Blog Hop: DIY Flower Brooch
Sizzix has always made me so happy. Fifteen years years ago, I was a student aid using the Ellison machine to cut letters for the bulletin board. Eight years later I got the original Sizzix machine—the red one with the handle that went up and down. And just this year I got the Big Shot! Rolling in style, right here! Many thanks to sweet Eileen Hull who asked if I wanted to do the Fresh Blog hop. I was thrilled! For my Fall Poppy brooch, I used the Sizzix #9 Flower die. This die punches three different flower shapes that you can stack or use alone. It’s pretty much a party when you cut your fabric. If you want to make your own Fall Poppy brooch, you will need: fabric, buttons, Katiedids, Mod Podge, bicone Swarovski crystals 4mm, and of course the #9 Flower die. Cut four different fabrics into flowers–I ran the die through twice per pattern for a total of eight passes (24 flowers) and yes I had a few extras (yay!). Coat each flower front and back with Mod Podge.

Supplies: teacup stamp, Speedball Oil-Based Block Printing Ink/fabric paint, 26 Ga. wire (thin wire), scissors, thread (light brown for the tea and another color to match your fabric), needle, felt, pencil, pen, pin-back, plastic bag or stuffing. Sip 1: Stamp teacup onto fabric. Note: I carved my stamp out of linoleum. Sip 2: Shape wire to look like steam. Wrap tip of wire around a pen to get a curved end. Use a single piece of long wire to create steam; this will make the next step easier. Sip 3: Position steam on opening of teacup and sew it on with brown colored thread. 3 strands of thread. Sip 4:

Who doesn’t love junk jewelry? My collection has grown to mammoth proportions. I recently sold my jewelry armoire because it didn’t go with our decor (and was quite heavy and cumbersome) so, I had to empty and sort everything out. Thank god for those Sephora drawstring gift bags. I have a small box with daily things (overflowing) and a big bag full of little bags shoved on a shelf in my closet. One major problem I have with cheap costume jewelry is how it doesn’t stand up to wear and time. Tarnishing is the worst offender. I’ve tried the jewelry cleaning solutions but it works most effectively on precious metals. Even if I’m only spending $5 on a bracelet, I don’t want to end up having to toss if after it’s become a staple in my wardrobe. It was only 3 years back that I designed and produced the interior for KunstGoud , the goldsmith studio/jewelry shop of Jeannette Knigge in Deventer. Some time ago she suddenly got the opportunity to expand, thus tripling(!) the total amount of workspace. To achieve this, there were some walls that needed knocking down. Some extensive reconstruction was necessary too, because the extra space (located behind the original one) was in real bad shape. A new interior design was also needed to make the newly created space function as a whole again. This time I worked together with interior architect Kasper Spormann on the design, a very pleasant collaboration! In our new design we pursued an equal mix between the tightness of a jewelry shop, the roughness of a workshop and a pleasurable environment to design custom jewelry with clients and give courses to students. The majority of extra space created in this expansion is utilised for more workbenches.

Birthday Fishes
Here’s my project for the current Paper Smooches SPARKS challenge. The challenge was to create a project inspired by this pretty beaded bracelet. I took my inspiration from the colors and the idea of something strung on a cord to create this fun birthday card using images from the Birthday Buddies set. I used my new Edgeabilities dies to cut two blue scallop edged strips that I layered along the bottom of the light aqua card base to make a watery backdrop. The set’s fish image is stamped on white cardstock, colored with Copic markers, and cut out. After lightly misting it with some shimmer spray and adding a little Glossy Accents to the eye, I attached it to the cardfront with a dimensional dot. I made a small banner in the open upper left corner of the cardfront. A trio of rounded edge pennants, cut from patterned paper scraps, is attached to a cream string. I threaded beads on the string to mimic the feel of the beaded bracelet before securing the banner in place.

My One Year Blog Anniversary!
I can’t believe it has been a whole year already! My main reason for starting my blog was prompted by my younger son going off to College. I also wanted to share my interests and passions. What started off mainly as a place to share my lampwork beads, jewelry, and doll making quickly evolved to add photography, digital graphics and scrapbooking. The more I blogged, the more fun things I discovered in the digital world. Now I just blog about whatever takes my fancy. Today, I am again doing what I did exactly one year ago: helping my younger son move back to school; this time for his second year in college. I also wanted to thank everyone that have visited my blog and left kind comments by giving away a couple of my lampwork creations. I will have a random draw a week from today, on September 25, 2011. Ice cream Sundae makingSWAN HILL 27th Sept After such a big day yesterday we decide to stay around the park today and relax a bit. We book the kids into a couple of the parks activities. Today they are having bead bracelet making classes which tickled Charlottes fancy and ice cream sundae creating which tickled all threes fancy. It was a good day for ice creams as the temp was to get to 30 degrees. By the end of the day the kids had made bracelets, created ice cream sundaes, pounded the jumping pillow, swam in the pool and did numerous laps of the caravan park on our bikes. Not so relaxing for the kids, but very relaxing for the folks. With the kids taken care of with all the goings on in the caravan park, we sat around under the sun with a few drinks watching the ‘nomad’ world go by. Prado with 20ft dual axle luxury caravan arrives. Wife gets out to start arm movements which only her hubby understands as he reverse parks the van.

Tinkerbell Tea Party
We recently celebrated Kaylee’s birthday by having a Tinkerbell Tea Party/Luncheon with 7 of her closest little girlfriends. It was SO MUCH FUN! I think every little girl has to have a doll cake at least once and this was her year. It was my first time making one and I think it turned out pretty good. I used the same ruffle technique that I did on this cake to frost it quickly. I also added edible shimmery powder to the entire thing which made her sparkle. I couldn’t believe how hard it was to find a Tinkerbell doll that wasn’t too creepy. Why don’t they make any that look like Tinkerbell in Peter Pan? This was the closest I could find and she has had a great time playing with her now that she is out of the cake. For activities we decorated fairy wings (double thick poster board) with stickers and markers and used little clothes pins to attach them to the back of the girls’ shirts. We also make pipe cleaner beaded bracelets.

Can you imagine.. Candy Land, cupcakes, face painting, pottery painting, bead bracelet craft, and hair-do’s.. all in an hour and a half? Oh my gosh I can’t tell you how exhausted I was around 12:30 today. I was pooped and ready for a nap, which is very unlike me. All for good reason though. Czech glass beads are beautiful additions to jewelry designs, but not too many people know how a bead comes into being. These beads are still made in the Czech Republic the same way they have been for hundreds of years. Take a journey into the makings of one special bead. Early Years (250 B.C.) : A piece of glass originally was created by lampworking. An oil lamp is used to melt glass around a mandrel, a thin metal rod around which a glass bead is shaped. When the mandrel is removed, it forms the hole in the bead. Starting in 900 A.D., these handmade beads were placed in graves. Middle Years (1500s): Cottage industries began showing up in Jablonec, Stanovsko and Bedrichov�� the present-day Czech Republic. These industries made beads for larger jewelry factories. Beginning in the 1800s, manufacturers developed special molds and machines to produce pressed glass beads. Pressed glass beads are made with hot softened glass being pressed into a hand-operated or mechanized mold.

Nothing, But It Was Good
Tonight was filled with nothing. I got home late and found Papa and the girls relaxing in the basement, with Cassidy making paper beads and Cailin sniffling through the cold she has been fighting since Saturday. After a 2 1/2 hour drive home , which fell on the heels of a 3 hour meeting, which had been preceded by a 2 1/2 hour drive there , I was a tad bit lazy sleepy, and ever so grateful for the white chicken chili in the crockpot. I kissed the girls, heard some stories about bus and boys drama (one and the same… life lesson 12,001… when one boy tells another boy that you like him, boy #1 really likes you and is testing the waters), and crashed for a few minutes to read email and blogs. Cailin joined me while I cleaned the kitchen and shared more about her day and her school work, or lack of it, which is an entirely other post. Cassidy had expanded her paper bead jewelry making to head bands and came upstairs to snatch a few old ones for her efforts, and Cailin and I snuggled on the sofa.
